REK, Kacey Musgraves, Sara Evans, more play BMI festivalPerforming rights organization BMI wrapped its 19th annual Key West Songwriter's festival on Sunday. The event featured more than 50 concerts over the five-day period and showcased more than 180 songwriters.
Country artists Sara Evans and Love and Theft also made appearances, as did recent Academy of Country Music album of the year winner Kacey Musgraves, Robert Earl Keen, Kree Harrison, Matraca Berg, Tony Joe White and 2013 BMI Country Icon Dean Dillon.
"The purpose of this festival is not only to expose the general public to the music but also create an environment for songwriters to meet other writers they might have not met before and inspire creativity within the songwriting community," said BMI Vice President of Writer/Publisher Relations Jody Williams. "This is the No. 1 event where BMI is able to do that over the course of the year. Spring in Key West — the weather is beautiful and the town is unique; there is a beach vibe that is the perfect atmosphere for that creativity."
More than 15,000 fans attended the Florida festival, which ran May 7-11. Proceeds from the event benefit the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center. The comprehensive rehabilitation program focuses on assessment and treatment for service men and women who have sustained traumatic brain injury and post-traumatic stress disorder from the Afghanistan and Iraqi conflicts.
